Definition of Flowchart
Romney and Steinbart (2006, p. 70) describe a flowchart as an analytical technique
used
to
describe some
aspect
of
an information system in
a
clear,
concise,
and
logical
manner,
which uses
a standard set
of
symbols
to
describe
pictorially
the
transaction processing procedures a company uses and the flow of data through a
system. It
is
also defined as
schematic
diagrams using
standardized symbols,
interconnecting
flow
lines
and
annotations
that
portray
the steps
involved
in
processing information through the information system (Gay & Simnett 2005, p.
782).
It is obvious that the depiction of
a
flowchart has been
its symbols, as shown in
Figure
2.2.
Flowcharting  symbols
can
be
divided
into
the
following
four
categories (Romney & Steinbart 2006, p. 71):
1)
Input/output symbols.
This symbol represents devices or media that provide input to or record output
from processing operations.
2)
Processing symbols.
This  symbol  either  show  what  type  of  device  is  used  to  process  data  or
indicate when processing is performed manually.
3)
Storage symbols.
This
symbol
represents
the
device
used to store
data that the system
is
not
currently using.
4)
Flow and miscellaneous symbols.
