Sentralisasi sumber daya dengan mudahnya bertambah pada sistem. Sejak
semua pengguna dan aplikasi-aplikasi bergantung pada ketersediaan DBMS
itu sendiri, gangguan terhadap komponen-komponen tertentu dapat terhenti
operasionalnya.
Menurut Connolly dan Begg (2002:293), Proses perancangan basis data dibagi
menjadi 3 tahap utama, yaitu :
1. Conceptual Database Design
The first phase of database design is called conceptual database design,
and involves the creation of a conceptual data model of the past of the
enterprise that we are interested in modeling. The data model is built using the
information documented in the user’s requirements specification. Conceptual
database design is entirely independent of implementation details such as the
target DBMS software, applications programs, programming language,
hardware platform, or any other physical considerations.
2. Logical Databse Design
The process of constructing a model of the data used in an enterprise
based on a specific data model, but independent of a particular DBMS and
other physical considerations.
3. Physical Database Design
The process producing a description of the implementation of the
database on secondary storage; it describes the base relations, file
organizations, and indexes used to achieve efficient access to the data, and
any associated integrity constraints and security measures.
