Departemen Engineering
& Maintenance
pada
umumnya menurut David dan Jack adalah:
Protecting and enhancing the financial value of the building and
grounds for the hotel’s owners
Supporting the efforts of all other hotel departments through the
timely attention to their Engineering & Maintenance needs
Controlling maintenance and repair costs
Controlling energy usage
Increasing the pride and morale of the hotel’s staff
Ensuring the safety of those working in and visiting the hotel
David dan Jack (2007:384) juga mengemukakan tanggung jawab dari
Departemen Engineering dan Maintenance, yaitu designing and constructing
the building (engineering), maintaining the buiding (maintenance), and
periodically renovating and modernizing it (design and renovation).
Rutherford (1987) melakukan sebuah survei
terhadap para engineer hotel,
dimana mereka diminta untuk memilih dari 58 pernyataan yang berhubungan
dengan operasional departemen engineering di dunia perhotelan modern. Dan
survey
tersebut menghasilkan 10 aspek terpenting yang terdapat pada
pekerjaan seorang engineer. (seperti dikutip Denney & Michael, 2007:197).
Ditambahkan Denney & Michael, walaupun data
(lihat tabel 2.5)
tersebut
sudah 20 tahun lamanya, data tersebut masih mewakili hal yang diperhatikan
dalam departemen engineering di dunia modern.
