CHAPTER 2
THEORETICAL FOUNDATION
2.1  Theoretical Foundation
This chapter will focus on the foundations and key elements of this research which
explain theories, literature and framework in video games, online games, consumers’
acceptance and other aspects that are relevant to this research.
2.1.1  Video Games
Today’s rapid growth on information system creates new pathways of entertainment
media as not only used in the advancement in workplace information system also
creates entertainment usage such as video games. Video games started way back to
the year 1940s where Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr and Estle Ray Mann came up with an
idea of creating a game called “Cathode-Ray Tube Amusement Device” the idea first
came up inspired by the world war II radar display by deriving cathode ray tubes and
an oscilloscope using knops to control the angle and trajectory of the light created by
the cathode ray tubes and displayed on the oscilloscope. This simple game was
developed as to simulate missile trajectory as the gamer use the knops to aim and fire
targets. This device is patented on 1947 but because of the cost of making this device
the “Cathode-Ray Tube Amusement Device” is never release and sold to public.
After this invention Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr became research Director for
“DuMont”, world’s first commercial television network (Cohen D.S., 2014).
