meaning of character is the persons represented in a dramatic or narrative work,
who are interpreted by the reader as possessing particular
moral intellectual and
emotional qualities
by guessing from what the persons say and and their
distinctive ways of saying it
? the
dialogue ? and what they do ? the action.
Character is a person that acts or presents the story in a work and it is
created to make readers imagine or know what happens in the novel. The
character will be filled with qualities in order to create a figure of character in the
reader’s mind. The character will do the action by saying dialogues or movement
in the story. The purpose is to relate between the character and the story itself.
“A character is someone in a literary work who has some sort of identify, an
identity which is made up by appearance, conversation, action, name and
thoughts going on the head…. Characters in books may have all sorts of links
with the people we meet everyday but we only meet them in books. (Gill,
1995, p.127)
From the citation above, a character has its own identity and it could be
identified by the readers through the appearance, dialogue, action, and name
clearly written in the story. Although a character is just a figure in a book, it links
to people’s characterization because the behavior and thinking are
almost
the
same with human being.
In
real life, people can only guess someone’s thought from the external
behavior, but in literary work, readers directly know the character’s feeling,
thinking, acting and everything that he or she does. The
purpose it to represent
the conflict which happens inside the work since the character was designed.
