There are some types of character in a work such as flat character and
round character. Flat character is the character that has one or two predominant
traits. Round character
is complex and has many sides of traits.
There are also
stock character, static character and dynamic character. Static character
is the
character that does not change from the beginning of the story until the end of the
story. Dynamic character is a character that changes from the beginning until the
end of the story (Arp and Johnson, 2006, p.103-107). These types of character
mostly appear in the work which deals with any kind of story.
2.2.2
Characterization
Characterization is personality of the character which characters can be
different because of it. Characterization is about what kind of people that the
characters classified in the work from their action, appearance, mind, and the
way they talk. The way that characters talk can be known in two ways
?
language and tone. The characters style, background and culture are represented
through language and text. So, the reader will imagine what kind of character
that the author makes.
The kind of conversations they have, the things they do, their appearances and
so on are the particular ways in which they author has chosen to characterize his
or her characters
. We may imagine an author looking at those aspects of
people that make up their personalities
and selecting some which are then put
together. (Gill, 1995, p.127)
From the citation above, it is proved that the characteristic of figures in a
work is explained by the conversation, action, appearance and anything they
have that could complete the figures as individuality. The author relates the
personality of people, selects some and puts it together until becoming a
