2.3.5.5 Say Nothing
Say nothing is the last strategy in politeness. Yule (1996) called this strategy
as say nothing strategy
while Brown and Levinson (1978) called this strategy as do not
do the FTA.
In this strategy, we do not say anything but we do something that
will
indicate what we intend to say.
The example of this strategy is when we intend to lend some money from
someone. In this strategy, we do not say anything to tell him but we just do some
gestures to indicate it such as we open our purse and act that we search for our money
there.
2.4 Impoliteness
Impoliteness is as difficult as politeness to be defined. There are a lot of things that
influence and determine which one is polite and
which one is
impolite. Moreover,
according to Bousfield (2008), we can say that impoliteness is the opposite of politeness
(p. 72).
He also added that, “…, impoliteness constitutes the communication of
intentionally gratuitous and conflictive verbal face-threatening acts (FTAs) (p. 72).
It
means that impoliteness is a kind of consciously act from the speaker to threaten the
hearer’s face.
