CHAPTER 2
THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
2.1
Introduction
Theoretical background holds a crucial part in conducting a research. It is
because the theoretical background will become
a basis foundation for the
writer to
analyze her research. Moreover, in this research, the writer used two main theories from
Pragmatics which are
the
politeness
theory from Brown and Levinson (1978) and
also
the
impoliteness theory from Culpeper (1996). In addition, the writer also added a little
explanation about the anger itself.
Furthermore, politeness
itself
has become a famous topic for the researchers to
research
and to define for a long time.
As addition, Vilkki (2013) stated that, “over the
last three decades, ‘face’, ‘facework’ and ‘politeness’ have been among the most heavily
debated notions in pragmatic and sociolinguistic research” (p. 1). It can also be seen that
there are so many theories
of politeness
from many researchers
such as Robin Lakoff
(1973), Geoffrey Leech
(1983)
and Brown and Levinson (1978) and many more
(Jaszczolt, 2002, pp. 312-318).
One of the famous politeness theories is the theory of
politeness from Brown and Levinson (1978) that the writer used
in this research. On the
other hand, there are just several fine researches about impoliteness. Bousfield (2008)
