The Meaning of Politeness
To make it easier, the writer
will explain about the meaning of the word
politeness first. Politeness word is derived from the word polite
which is an adjective.
According to
Brasdefer (2007), the etymology of word ‘polite’ is derived
from the
Latinate past-participle of the verb ‘polire’ which is ‘politus’ that has a meaning as
polished or smoothed (as stated from Discourse Pragmatics, 2007). Brasdefer (2007)

polite; refinement of manners; urbanity; courteous behavior; complaisance; obliging
attentions”. After that, it is about the meaning of politeness itself. From those
definitions, it can be said that politeness is related to the attitude or manner that we need
to show to others and it is more about being polite to the society.
In brief, in this
definition, politeness is about etiquette.
