interactants (p. 61). Specifically, Yule (1996) noted that positive face is, the need to be
accepted, even liked, by others, to be treated as a member of the same group, and to
know that his or her wants are shared by others (p. 62).
Negative face does not mean that something
is impolite. Negative face
itself
is
defined as, the basic claim to territories, personal preserves, rights to non-distraction
(Brown and Levinson, 1978, p. 61). This means that the negative face is related to the
freedom. Similarly, Yule (1996) also noted the definition of negative face as, the need
to be independent, to have freedom of action, and not to be imposed by others (p. 62).
To simplify, Yule (1996) said that the positive face is related to the need to be connected
and the negative face is related to the need to be independent (p. 62).
2.3.3 Positive and Negative Politeness
The positive politeness is a politeness that deals with the positive face and the
negative politeness is a politeness that deals with the negative face. Yule (1996), added
that positive politeness
is a face saving acts which is concerned with the persons
positive face will tend to show solidarity, emphasize that both speakers want the same
thing, and they have a common goal (p. 62). It can be seen when you ask your friend to
play basketball and you say Lets play basketball next Saturday. As we know, the
positive politeness is a politeness that deals with a positive face and this example shows
that we treat our friend as the same group member which this thing relates
to the
meaning of positive face itself.
