2.2 Theoretical Frameworks
The theoretical frameworks describe how the system is going to be developed. All of
the phases will be clearly discussed below.
2.2.1 Rapid Application Development (RAD)
Rapid
application
development
(RAD) is
one
of
Information
System
Development
technique
that
emphasizes
on
user
involvement
by
using
iterative
prototyping
to
accelerate
the
system
development
process.
RAD
is
sometimes
called
spiral
approach
because it is repeatedly spiral through development phases in order to build the system
completely that meets user requirements.
RAD involves users throughout development processes such as in the analysis,
design,
and
construction
activities.
It
uses
prototypes
to
accelerate
requirement
analysis
and system design.
As
said
by
Whitten
[4],
a
prototype
is
a
smaller-scale,
representative
or
working
model of the users requirements or a proposed design for an information system.
According to Whitten [4], the basic principle behind prototyping is that users know
what
they
want
when
they
see
it
working.
In
RAD,
a
prototype
eventually
evolves
into
the final information system. RAD is showed in Figure 2.16 below. The following
explanation
is related with the numbered bullets:
