This is also the statement that support Bourdieu study about social class:
“For some classes, such as the underclass, positional properties may directly
reflect the socialization incurred by extremely limited material resources. Here
class position and class situation are practically identical.” (Swartz, 1997, p.152)
Lower class people, their position and status can be seen from the
property and things that they have. The limited material is one of the reasons that
they could stay on lower class. The class position and situation here are
practically known and identified from the material resources that they have.
It is shown that the way to identify the people or group of people status,
can be known from the material things that they have. It is the answer why
people can be classified in some classes which differentiated their position,
situation, status, power and economy. Their identity also influenced by this class
categorized and they should struggle to reach higher class.
Bourdieu also identified social class and status based on people
education. This is the statement that talked about education influenced people
position and class:
“Bourdieu sees the educational system as the principal institution controlling the
allocationof status and privilege in contemporary societies…..Bourdieu observes
that type and prestige of educational institution attended are as influential for
later careers as are number of years spent in schooling.” (Swartz, 1997, p.189-
193)
