The Politeness Strategies
The strategies in politeness can be divided into five. Those strategies will be
explained one by one below.
1.
without redressive action, baldly
Do the FTA
on record
2. positive politeness
with redressive action
4. off record
3. negative politeness
5. Don’t do the FTA
Figure 2.1 Possible Strategies for Doing FTAs (Brown and Levinson, 1978, p. 69)
Moreover, Yule (1996) gave
the similar figure of politeness strategies by
following the Brown and Levinson’s concept (1978).
How to get a pen from someone else
Say something
say nothing
(but search in bag)
On record
off record
(‘I forgot my pen’)
face saving acts
bald on record
(‘Give me a pen’)
Positive politeness
Negative politeness
(‘How about letting me use your pen?’)
(‘Could you lend me a pen?’)
Figure 2.2 How To Get a Pen from Someone Else (following Brown and Levinson 1987) as stated from (Yule, 1996, p. 66)
Based on those two figures, we can see that the two researchers have the
same aim
in explaining the politeness strategies. The differences are just in the way of
expressing ideas
and
also
the terms that they are used. Brown and Levinson (1978)
