mentioned the strategies by using these terms (without redressive action, baldly, positive
politeness, negative politeness, off record and also don’t do the FTA) while Yule (1996)
used these terms (bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record and
also the say nothing).
Actually, the other
terms as “say something” and “face saving
acts” in Figure 2.2 (Yule, 1996) is as same as “do the FTA” and “with redressive action”
in Figure 2.1 (Brown and Levinson, 1978). In general, they are all just the same.
Furthermore, the writer will use politeness strategy terms
from Yule (1996)
in this research because those
terms just more familiar
for us especially
for English
Department students in
Bina Nusantara University. Besides, the writer will also explain
the example of those strategies by using the explanation from Brown and Levinson
(1978) because it is more specific and more complete.
2.3.5.1
Bald on Record
Bald on record is one of
politeness
strategy that is most direct, clear,
unambiguous and concise (Brown and Levinson, 1978, p. 69). In the bald on record, the
speaker uses this strategy to get maximum efficiency more than to satisfy the hearer’s
face, even at any degree (Brown and Levinson, 1978, p. 95). Moreover, the structure of
the
bald on record
strategy
uses the imperative forms. Brown and Levinson (1978)
elaborated bald on record strategy as on this table below:
