2.1.3.6 Trading Off Usability and Security
Trading off usability and security means that when we want to add the security, there
should
be
some
reduction
in
the
usability part.
As we
want to decrease the chance that
the system accept
false user by reducing
the FAR,
the probability of the authorize
user
being rejected or FRR will be added as well [12].
The same thing happen if we want to increase the usability by reducing the FRR and
making the system tolerate to bigger difference
in the biometric data; the system will be
more vulnerable to attack as the FAR is increased as a result of decreasing the FRR.
To deal with the tradeoffs problem, the common way is to balance the FAR
and FRR.
The tradeoffs curve between the FAR and FRR in Figure 2.2 shows that
the curve
will
create the Equal Error Rate (ERR) point where FAR and FRR are equal. Low ERR
indicates that the system have strong security and insignificant false rejection rate.
